Staying safe on the roads out there is a big deal to us all. Some may take it lightly than others but if you are out there on a daily basis you know the risks and the danger. Now if you are a bicyclist or a pedestrian sharing the roadways with other people, vehicles, and motorized vehicles then you know the risk for yourself. Frankly you may know it all too well.
Here are some tips for staying safe out on the roads:

Be seen! It is not wise by any means to wear black or dark clothing at nighttime when it gets dark. This makes it difficult for others to see you. You want to be seen so others know your presence and can act accordingly.

Next is to be a defensive bicyclist or pedestrian. This may sound silly but being on the offensive can get you injured. Pedestrian injuries are all too common these days. To avoid this, take action to assume you are the responsible one. Do not cross a crosswalk blindly or with great ambition–make sure cars are stopped even before you cross.

Obey traffic signals. There are many signals out there for motorized vehicles to obey but there are also some for you the pedestrian or the cyclist to obey as well. When everyone is a law-abiding citizen then we can all function and get to where we are going near seamlessly.

Stay alert. As soon as you walk somewhere you may get easily distracted if you are walking with someone and carrying a conversation or are listening to music with ear buds in. It is fine to do those things as long as it is not compromising your assertiveness to the moving environment around you.

Overall, be safe. Take extra precaution to be safe and look out for others. It may even be worth it if you are a cyclists to have added light-up or added reflective gear to your bicycle, helmet, or attire. Pedestrians may want to wear bright vests with reflective tape so that they can be easily spotted. Although it does not make the greatest fashion statement it does make for a safer participant in the motor vehicle and shared pedestrian roadways.
